Citizen Science: Music Classification & Image Mapping

The next Explorative Design assignment is about Citizen Science. My project suggestion is about music classification and image mapping. A few years ago I was working on a little university project with two colleagues in this domain – we tried to write an algorithm that analyzes both a music track and an image in order to map the music to an image. It were our first steps in this area and as you can imagine we didn’t come far. ;) It’s quite hard to automate something like this, but I think by adding some kind of learning algorithm and support from a lot of users, this project could be very interesting.

Here are some ideas an thoughts / required steps:

– music analysis & feature extraction
– image processing & feature extraction
– smartphone app lets user listen to music (short snippets of tracks)
– app presents two or more images and asks the user to choose the most fitting image

A second approach would be to skip the image analysis part and just let the user choose between moods (music classification). A lot of things could be added to such an app:

– like / favorite music
– find music based on mood
– maybe some kind of “listen to whole track” button (maybe some kind of cooperation with something like spotify – or a purchase button)
– skip 30 seconds button to “browse” through songs

Typography – good and bad examples

The next Explorative Design workshop is about typography. As an introduction to the typography topic we read The Basics of Typography, which is a really good warming-up article about typography. I can also recommend the Design and discovery TED Talk by David Carson – it’s both quite interesting and very amusing.

As a preparation for the workshop itself we have to find examples for typography, a good and a bad one.

Example for good design

Last week we had our first Explorative Design workshop and we were asked to bring an everyday object of good design. I have to admit, that finding something that is good designed is quite hard for me since it’s something you normally don’t recognize, which is somewhat unfair from a designer perspective. Designer (hopefully) put everything they got into something to make it the best possible product but it mostly gets more attention if it is flawed. Just look around you, it’s more easier to find something that could be designed better. :D

Sketching new touch screen functions

Posted by on 5. November 2014 filed in Creativity | | tagged with

Today’s the last task of the current Explorative Design assignment and it’s about sketching new touch screen functions. Yesterday we had to think about how the interface of a touch screen could look like for devices like an oven or a washing machine. Now it’s time to think about adding completely new functions, that become possible by using a touch screen.
